about

In Senegambia some parents send their boys to a certain kind of Quran school where they live and where part of their daily activity is to beg on the streets. In some places you find these boys sleeping on the streets – hungry, dirty and with clothes full of holes. The song is for these boys. In Mandinka we call them Almudo, in Wolof they say Talibé.

lyrics

“If the Talibé showered and put on nice clothes
Nobody will give him anything
If he puts on nice shoes
Nobody will give him anything

I’m not against kids going to the Quran school
But the little child I saw was not even 6 years old
The child you will see will be 4 or 5 years old
I’m wondering why
With clothes full of holes and with his dirty feet
Walking around hungry
The Talibé support begging”
