about

The first lines of the 19th century lyrics for this song roughly translate as:

“I went out on a summer's day to hear birdsong that could touch the heart,
In the deep valleys among nightingales and other small birds that talk”

and, as such, the song has become indelibly associated with the Danish summer and its pleasures. However the melody is much older, dating back to at least the 17th century and is known throughout Scandinavia.
