about

Bamba Bojang was a trader who was born in Brikama, Suma Kunda and then later moved to Jarra, where he lived until his death almost 70 years ago. A descendant of kings, he was a true philanthropist. People loved him and this song is in his praise. The tune is traditional and I have updated the original words of my grandfather, Alhaji Bai Konte, for Bamba Bojang's genealogy both before and after Bamba himself and also twist the tradition a little by not only mentioning the big fishes of the past, but also the small potatoes of today.

lyrics

alinga bambo kumbo
alinga bambo wasi
allah tallahi bambo taleh yeh

bamba bojang bota jammah ning jammah le to

mansa jatuba la bambo suma kondaa
mansa jatungding nna bambo yela
alli marlong mansa ke filila bambo yela
mansa demba la bambo yela
maddi sutungo la bambo yela
landing barrabal la bambo be yo malikiyama

sukuro mono banta
ginger mbero banta

Let’s cry for the crocodile
And weep for the crocodile
God has taken his crocodile

Who were Bamba Bojang’s forefathers?

Chief Jatuba’s crocodile from Suma Kunda
Chief Jatungding’s crocodile is lying dead
You don’t know that chief Kefili’s crocodile is lying dead
Chief Demba’s crocodile is lying dead
Maddi Sutungo’s crocodile is lying dead
Landing Barrabal’s crocodile is on his way to next world

The sugared porridge is finished
The ginger juice is finished

Reflecting both his new home and life in Denmark, and his birth and history in The Gambia, there is a quiet confidence to Dawda Jobarteh's third album. His music ranges from original kora instrumentals and social-commentary songs, to Gambian and Scandinavian tunes hundreds of years old. Unique and compelling. ... more
