about

You see a child on the street and only by looking in his eyes you can see his hopelessness. He has no self confidence. By living in a society where he is only noticed when his labour is needed, he never experienced love, care, respect and recognition. When they are not satisfied with him he realises that he does not belong anywhere. He can be sent away at any time. If this child was in my care I would treat him as my own child and I would give him the same respect as I would give any adult.

We have a long and strong tradition of leaving the care of our children to others by sending the children to relatives and masters. Some children are given away because of the parent's poverty. The parents are trying to save them, but instead they can be sending them off to something much worse than poverty. In broken families some parents use the children as weapons to hurt each other. Some parents give their young daughters away to marry against the girls' wills.

In Gambia a child's only acknowledged home is with the biological father. When a child is living somewhere else, that child is always in jeopardy. This can have serious consequences and cause lifelong pain.

lyrics

dinding do le nata dyang
a be kumbola a dimingta
a bama tata faroto
bari nga mutaku kondingo

aaa dyang ma keyati
yeh foy ma kengyalong

A child came here
He was crying painfully
His mother went to the farm
I took care of him as my own

Some say:
This is not your home
Don’t you understand?
